Crew

Now let me say a few words about our crew that consists of six people: three Czechs and three Slovaks.

Peter is the most experienced one; this is his third year here and therefore he's a bit like vice-boss when Ryan isn't present. He knows everything that should be done - when and how - plus he can drive anything and anywhere if Ryan asks him to do so. Last year I had a big respect to him and I still have (and so does everybody else). But this year I feel much more relaxed when I work with him in a gyros trailer. I don't feel like if he was a supervisor since he behaves very nicely to me. He respects my decisions and I respect his experience. Actually, the whole crew is much better balanced than last year. So far we get along perfectly. We don't have any argues or reasons to get angry with each other. In addition to this, Ryan says we are the best educated and most fit crew on fairs. Peter is a Slovak champion in wrestling, Mike does boxing and Pavel plays squash regularly when he's in Prague. (Unfortunately, Americans don't play squash at all.) When Ryan saw how we spend our breaks (Peter, Mike and Tomas lift weights and do various exercises, I run 3 miles every day) he named us "a fitness division" :-) Actually, he also lifts weights and runs a lot to keep himself in a good shape. Well, back to us. Peter comes from Nitra and next year he is going to get a master degree at the Faculty of Business Management. So does Mike. Last year Mike came to the US not knowing a single English word (well, except for several notorious). After four days NYC he found a job in a candy shop in a town half way between NYC and Atlantic City. He says he hardly knows any grammar, but his English vocabulary is pretty sufficient for working at food concession's and watching movies. Mike is always fun and friendly, never refuses if you ask him for help. The third Slovak is Tomas who already worked for Ryan last year. He comes from Nitra as well. He just got a bachelor degree so he's of the same age like me, Tereza and Pavel. Tomas is talkative and friendly too. He always makes me laugh easily. Tereza, as you probably know, is my schoolmate. She's the greatest travel companion I could imagine. On our trips we often happen to get in quite unusual situations, experience much fun and always have a good luck :-) I am glad she said YES to my offer to come here with me, and she's glad too :-) Pavel is another friend of mine who I brought this year. We have known each other since childhood; he comes from Jicin as well. Besides Tereza and Pavel I mediated a job for two more guys. One of them is Ales, my classmate from elementary school, and the other one is Peter, Ales's friend from university. Peter comes from Liptovsky Mikulas so the ration between Czechs and Slovaks is 4:4 :-) The two of them work for Ryan's good friend Charlie who sells pretzels and own several stores of Auntie Anne's chain.
